Abstract
Automation & Robotics represents the key tool to improve the experiment results and to maximize the scientific return and success of a space mission. In solar system exploration, it is worldwide intended to land on the surface of various different planets, satellites, asteroids and comets, in order to interact with samples collected on the surface. Therefore, the mission success from the scientific standpoint is strictly related to the reliability and the operational flexibility of the robotics system devoted to collect, handle and distribute the samples to the different scientific instruments on the landers. In this area, ASI is now contributing to the ROSETTA Mission with the development of the ROSETTA Lander Sample Drilling and Distribution subsystem and is assessing the possibility to extend its design to an Exobiology application in the Mars Exploration scenario.
